Winter at Middleton Place
While Middleton Place is an amazing place to visit any season of the year, winter is a special time to visit as well. There are less tourists visiting the Charleston, South Carolina area at the time, and the camellias are always blooming.
I am not a fan of winter, but I know in order to have the beautiful spring flowers, we must endure the somewhat cold weather of winter. Thankfully in the south, winters are generally mild, except for the occasional few days that the temperature drops into the high twenties or thirties.
Anyway, Middleton Place is known for its camellias. I have had people message me and ask me the best place to see the beautiful blossoms at. I always suggest Middleton Place because there is an abundance of them there. You see shades of red, pink, and white all over the place. You will catch an occasional bee working hard to get the pollen out. You will find me taking pictures of all of the flowers that I can possibly find.
Before you leave Middleton Place, always take a look at their beautiful sculpture. The wood nymph always has the flower that is currently in bloom in her hands. It is always exciting to see what will be in her hands on each visit. Plus she is displayed on your sticker that you receive when you first arrive to the ticket counter. I have quite a collection of them built up now.
Middleton Place is really a peaceful place to visit. I highly recommend visiting in late winter and early spring when the azaleas are blooming. I am literally in photography Heaven during that time of year. It’s a wonderful place to escape for a few hours.
Oh yeah, before I forget, watch out for the alligators. On warmer days they come out and sun themselves. They don’t seem to be interested in harming anyone, so just enjoy being able to see such a beautiful animal in their natural world.

Just stop for a minute and think about how many people have walked here over the years, and how the view has always been relatively the same.

Middleton Place is located at 4300 Ashley River Road in Charleston, South Carolina. It is open daily from 9-5. There is so much more to do there than what I wrote about today, but that will come later.
I love that close up of the camellia. Beautiful!
