The Guillebeau House
One of the most interesting cabins you can stay in overnight in the state of South Carolina is located at Hickory Knob State Resort Park. The Guillebeau House is a special part of history, and if you are brave enough, you can spend the night for a price cheaper than most hotel rooms.
The Guillebeau House was built sometime in the 1770’s by Andre Guillebeau and his wife in what is now known as Mt. Carmel, South Carolina. As a side note, that is an interesting, somewhat deserted town, to visit. Anyway, they were French Huguenots that were looking to live life without religious persecution. They settled in a town that was named after their home in France, which was named New Bordeaux.
Over the years, many Guillebeau’s lived in the house. From what I have read, it apparently wasn’t used for some years until the 1930’s when family reunions started being held there. They did the reunions for a few years. Eventually the property was sold, and tenant families started living in the house. Finally a descendant of the Guillebeau family decided to purchase the house back, and once she did, it was donated to Hickory Knob State Resort Park so it could be preserved.
In 1983, the Guillebeau House was moved from its home to the place that it now calls home. A major renovation happened to bring the house to how it looks in present time. While some elements of the original house were preserved, modern day technology was also added to it. The house has electricity, water, heat, air, refrigerator, and a television. You can enjoy history, but still have all of the comforts that we are accustomed to now.
One of the things that caused my interest in staying in the house was that someone declared that it was haunted. I had posted a few pictures of the outside of the house a few years ago on a website, and a lady let me know that she had been terrified of the house when she was there and had to leave during the middle of the night. I can honestly say that it is not haunted, but there are little visitors upstairs that would scare some people. I slept on the couch downstairs when I stayed. It was mainly because the loft was over the beds, and I didn’t want to wake up during the night and hit my head on the boards over the bed.
So much history has been incorporated into the house. Old tools line the wall in the kitchen and dining room. An old stove is in the kitchen to cook on. An ice chest is in the corner of the dining room used as a decoration now. The living room is so dark that you would think you had candles burning instead of lamps. The front porch was so peaceful to sit on. So many historic pictures and newspaper articles are in frames on the wall. I loved every minute that I got to spend there. I have included the pictures of the pictures so you can see how the house originally looked for yourself.

In addition to the Guillebeau House being located at Hickory Knob, a beautiful golf course is there as well. If you ever do decide to visit, you can play golf, fish out of Lake Thurmond, and then rent the Guillebeau House to stay in during your visit. A restaurant is located at this particular park, and if you aren’t up to staying in this beautiful cabin, several plain cabins are on the property in addition to lodge rooms. Hickory Knob State Resort Park is located at 1591 Resort Drive in McCormick, South Carolina.
I found this article in an attempt to find more on what happened to me here. This house is 100% haunted, coming from someone it happened to, who did believe in such things before.
