Florence Veterans Park

Florence Veterans Park is somewhat of a hidden gem that is in plain sight in Florence, South Carolina. It is located right beside the very popular Florence Center, but if you didn’t know that it was there, you wouldn’t know that it was there.

Apparently the park was dedicated on Veterans Day in 2008, but I only found out about it in 2018, and then waited until 2020 to finally visit. I was at the Florence Center for an event, so I drove to the end of the parking lot where this park is located and decided to explore. I was very impressed by what I found.

The park is well laid out. Paved walkways let you walk from one monument to another at ease. Some beautiful sculptures are placed in different sections of the park in honor of loved ones. An amazing fountain trickles water down a wall and the sound is quite mesmerizing. The design on the fountain could either be described as tear drops or rain drops, but it is beautiful regardless of how you view it.

One of my favorite sculptures that I found was of the family being reunited. We all know that a family being reunited after a “tour of duty” is a very special time for all involved. Missing your loved ones is hard on anybody, but it has to be harder when you know there is a chance that you may never get to see or hold them again. It really puts life in perspective if you think about it.

Overall, I highly recommend a visit to this park. You can spend anywhere from ten minutes to two hours just walking around. If you just want a quick little walk, or a full blown history lesson, it is up to you.

The park was dedicated November 11, 2008.

The entrance to the park.
This monument has a piece of the World Trade Center in it.
A POW-MIA chair.
Another view of my favorite sculpture there.
The monument with the different branches of military inscribed on it.

I have two different addresses for Florence Veterans Park that I found online. One is 3300 West Radio Drive in Florence, South Carolina and the other is Woody Jones Boulevard in Florence, South Carolina. As long as you can find the Florence Center, previously known as the Florence Civic Center, you will be able to find this park. Admission is free to visit the park.

  1. It is without a doubt one of the best public parks dedicated to veterans anywhere in the southeast and beyond. Five or six of the the sculptures and monuments have won international awards. The correct address is 601 Woody Jones Blvd, Florence. That is the location, not a a mailing address. The mailing address is Florence Recreation Services, 513 Barnes Street, Florence, SC 29501.
A little back ground about the dog (Boykin Spaniel, SC State Dog), named Lady. The original monument, while still in clay and not yet cast in bronze, had the dog jumping on the leg of the Soldier returning to his family. When the sculptor, Alex Palkovich, showed some of his friends his effort, a common response was something like, “what a cute dog.” He felt the dog detracted from the reunion of the family, so it was removed before being cast. A few years later, Alex decided to recast the dog in the running position coming to greet the family. It works!!! Thanks for your interest.
